Last Week

My nephew Tim came for a weeks visit and fun was had by one and all. He came Monday the 5th of July and stayed until the 10th of July.

Friday we rented Jet-Ski’s at Fort Myers Beach. We got a deal on them, $80 per hour and truth be told, we should have rented then for 1/2 hour. An hour sounds like a short time but once you get out in the gulf a bit you soon realize that you want to say “is that all this is?” By that I mean, what else can I do with this thing that is fun? Back and forth, up and back. It would have been much better if we could have taken the ski’s anywhere we wanted to go for an hour then come back.

We had boundaries. Between two of the larger buildings and as far out as to not see the yellow umbrella’s of the guy’s that rented us the ski’s. A pretty good area but still restricted. Plus the water was just a bit choppy for me. I would of liked it to be smooth. You could go faster then when it is choppy. Maybe one morning, when the water is smooth we will go again.

Talk later...............

Medical Condition

Well it seems like my foot is 99.9% healed. All the surgery sites are healing well and if it weren’t for a small scrape on the bottom of my foot I would have made it to the 100% mark. But it is there and should be gone in about a week.

My only other ailment is...... I went to a dermatologist to have him look at a mole on my chest. While I was there he found two pre-cancer spots on my head. He did a freezing thing and said they should be healed in a week or so. Except for now it looks terrible. But I’ll live. And oh, by the way, he said the chest mole was fine.

My nephew Tim is coming for a week visit starting Monday (Jul 5th) and is staying until Saturday. That should be fun. I am just hoping that the weather stays the same as it is right now. Which is extremely hot and rain showers in the late afternoon.

Nancy has jury duty today. She had to be there by 8:00am so she had to get up at 6:00am to get ready. So far she has not called to report how things are going. It is 11:35am so they should be breaking for lunch soon and I’m sure she will call then.

So fans, Go Blackhawks...................

Cheap Tomatoes

Normally I tend to do my bitchin’ in my own words but I could not pass this up. It sums up the thing that our leaders are not telling us. Things that maybe a lot of people never knew or really never thought about it. Everyone talks about it, but not everyone know ALL the problems caused. Read and do some serious reflecting on what the country is going through along with terrorists trying to kill “Americans,” war in two locations, Iraq and Afghanistan.

From a California English school teacher - - -

As you listen to the news about the student protests over illegal  Immigration, there are some things that you should be aware of:

I am in charge of the English-as-a-second-language department at a large southern California high school which is designated a Title 1 school, meaning that its students average lower socioeconomic and income levels

Most of the schools you are hearing about, South Gate High, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park, etc.., where these students are protesting, are also Title 1 schools.

Title 1 schools are on the free breakfast and free breakfast and lunch program. When say free breakfast, I'm not talking a glass of milk and roll -- but a full breakfast and cereal bar with fruits and juices that would make a Marriott proud. The waste of this food is monumental, with trays and trays of it being dumped in the trash uneaten.
(OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK)

I estimate that well over 50% of these students are obese or at least moderately overweight. About 75% or more DO have cell phones. The school also provides day care centers for the unwed teenage pregnant girls (some as young as 13) so they can attend class without the inconvenience of having to arrange for babysitters or having family watch their kids.
(OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK)

I was ordered to spend $700,000 on my department or risk losing funding for the upcoming year even though there was little need for anything; my budget was already substantial. I ended up buying new computers for the computer learning center, half of which, one month later, have been carved with graffiti by the appreciative students who obviously feel humbled and grateful to have a free education in America
(OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK)

I have had to intervene several times for young and substitute teachers whose classes consist of many illegal immigrant students here in the country less than 3 months who raised so much hell with the female teachers, calling them "Putas" (whores ) and throwing things, that the teachers were in tears.

Free medical, free education, free food, day care, etc., etc, etc.  Is it any wonder they feel entitled not only to be in this country but to demand rights, privileges and entitlements?

To those who want to point out how much these illegal immigrants contribute to our society because they LIKE their gardener and housekeeper and they like to pay less for tomatoes: spend some time in the real world of illegal immigration and see the TRUE costs.

Higher insurance, medical facilities closing, higher medical costs, more crime, lower standards of education in our schools, overcrowding, new diseases etc., etc, etc. For me, I'll pay more for tomatoes.

Americans, We need to wake up. The guest worker program will be a disaster because we won't have the guts to enforce it. Does anyone in their right mind really think they will voluntarily leave and return?

It does, however, have everything to do with culture: A third-world culture that does not value education, that accepts children getting pregnant and dropping out of school by 15 and that refuses to assimilate, and an American culture that has become so weak and worried about "political correctness " that we don't have the will to do anything about it.

CHEAP LABOR? Isn't that what the whole immigration issue is about?

Business doesn't want to pay a decent wage.

Consumers don't want expensive produce.

Government will tell you Americans don't want the jobs.

But the bottom line is cheap labor. The phrase "cheap labor" is a myth ,

a farce, and a lie. There is no such thing as "cheap labor."

Take, for example, an illegal alien with a wife and five children. He takes a job for $5.00 or 6.00/hour. At that wage, with six dependents, he pays no income tax, yet at the end of the year, if he files an Income Tax Return, he gets an "earned income credit" of up to $3,200 free.

He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent.

He qualifies for food stamps..

He qualifies for free (no deductible), no co-pay) health care.

His children get free breakfasts and lunches at school.

He requires bilingual teachers and books.

He qualifies for relief from high energy bills...

If they are or become, aged, blind or disabled , they qualify for SSI. Once qualified for SSI they can qualify for Medicare. All of this is at (our) taxpayer's expense .

He doesn't worry about car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance.

Taxpayers provide Spanish language signs, bulletins and printed material.

He and his family receive the equivalent of $20.00 to $30.00/hour in benefits.

Working Americans are lucky to have $5.00 or $6.00/hour left after paying their bills AND his.

The American taxpayers also pay for increased crime, graffiti and trash clean-up.

Cheap labor? YEAH RIGHT! Wake up people!

THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS WE SHOULD BE ADDRESSING TO THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES FOR EITHER PARTY. 'AND WHEN THEY LIE TO US AND DON'T DO AS THEY SAY, WE SHOULD REPLACE THEM AT ONCE!'

Almost There....

Well I am about 99.5% all healed up. The bone graphs in my foot and the reconstruction area is, according to my foot doc is all healed. I still have a small scrape of the top layer of my skin that is healing nicely.

At least I can go into the pool everyday for a little while. No more then 20-40 minutes. Going in any longer makes the scraped area very soft and it does not seem to let the scrape scab over. So a little while is good enough for me. At least for now.

Yesterday afternoon we went to Ft Myers Beach to walk on the beach. I discovered that I need more strength in my legs. It is hard for me to walk any long distance the way my legs are now. Plus I guess it would not hurt any if I lost a few pounds. Easy to say I guess.

Update later..............

Therapy

So now I am in therapy for my foot. I must admit that it is hard. Lot of stretching, weights and electric stimulus. It was kind of funny the first time I had the stimulus. The therapist said to me, “let me know when you feel the tingling.” Since I do not have any feeling in my feet he was up to 250 volts when I told him of my condition. He dialed it back down to 200 volts since I don’t have the feeling.

So, hopefully I will get better because of the therapy. Time will tell.

Also the small scrape on the bottom of my foot is healing. Slow, but healing anyway.

Getting Better

Since my operation on 10 Feb 2010 it has been a long road back to recovery. A few weeks ago my doctor said that I was all healed and that I can start putting weight on the foot. He had some restrictions like wearing a shoe boot, not to stay in the pool for more then 20 minutes at a time.

So, the day after I got the clean bill of health I went into the pool. Well, guess what? I was in there for less then 5 minutes and while getting on a mat to float around, Nancy noticed that I had succeeded to scrape the bottom of my foot and removed a layer of skin from the ball of my foot.

So it was get out of the pool, and begin the wet/dry covering of the now new abrasion on my foot. I don’t have an appointment with my foot doctor until June 3rd. I am not looking forward to seeing him. He is going to freak.

Maybe I will heal before then. Keep your fingers crossed!

Great Weather

The weather here is beginning to get warm. It would be ok if the humidity did not get high but that is never the case here in Florida.

Temp’s are going to be starting to get into the 90º’s, my foot is healing well and I can only wait to climb into that pool that is connected to my house. Soon I hope.....

Other then that nothing is new. Seems like Chicago is having some problems with the good tax paying citizens. The few that pay’s the least amount of taxes but commands the most amount of police service. The weather was warm a few days last week and several people were shot, stabbed and hit with baseball bats.

Something needs to be done about that. But what?

Late Entry

Sorry it took so long for me to update this blog but really nothing has changed since the last post.

My foot is still healing and I am optimistic that within the next few months I should be good to go. It is a really slow process but it is healing.

I will try to update this in a more timely manner.

Until later....

Have a good weekend............

Foot Update

Well as you all know my foot was on the mend. I mean it was getting sort of better after the reconstruction. But as luck would have it, bad luck, I developed a rather large split where the stitches were. Not the entire incision but about a 1/2 inch split. It also was very deep. In fact you could see the bone.

Luckily I had an appointment with the doctor and he scheduled me for the very next day to re suture the open wound. I went and it is now closed so I am hoping that it will stay closed and I will not have any further issues with that.

My recovery is estimated to take a few months so I am hoping that it will all heal up nicely and I can get on with enjoying Florida and the things it has to offer.

Later for an update............

On The Mend

Well as the title of this post is “on the mend” there really should be a basis for no further typing.

But I’ll do it anyway..... I went to the doctor the other day and he prescribed more antibiotics for me. He is worried about infection.

He took out the stitches the last visit and I need to go back this Thursday for a check up. There is still one spot on the stitches that is still kind of open. SO we will see what he has planned for me.

He originally said that he may put my foot in a cast to immobilize the foot while it heals. But we will see.

Later...............

Post Opp Update

Well I had my foot surgery this past Wednesday and I spent one night in the hospital. I was so glad that I got released from the hospital because I might have died if I had to stay another day. It was horrible, hot, no (good) TV service. They had these little screens that you pull in front of your face. Every channel looked like it does if you have satellite service and a storm is coming. Picture breaking up so bad that I had to turn it off. . BUT I will say that the night shift nurse was on her game. When she said she was coming back in 10 minutes to give me medicine she was there. Can’t say that for the other shifts.

I have my post-op doctor’s appointment this Tuesday so I will see what the status of my surgery. Unwrap my foot and see how it is doing. Should be interesting. I’ll post pictures.

That’s about it.

Recovering at home........ see ya’ later.

Pre-Testing

Went to Lee Memorial Hospital today for Pre-Testing. They did an EKG and took some blood. I guess it is something that you need to do. I am really not looking forward to this operation. They tell me it is going to be done under general anesthesia. I would rather they just give me enough whatever to make me drowsy. Don’t think I like a tube down my throat.

But if it will fix my feet and there will be no more ulcers then I’m ok with it I guess.

So stay tuned and wait for the updates.

Winter in Florida

Seems that since we have moved here the weather has been in the extremes, either to hot for this time of year or to cold for this time of the year. It has been cold here in sunny Florida. Colder then usual for this time of year. The orange crops were threatened and it is estimated that 30% of the farmers crops were damaged. So if you’re buying a Florida orange at your grocery store and it cost you $3.00 that’s why. The cold!

When we first moved here in July 2008 it rained everyday for about 2 weeks. Friends of mine were calling me asking me how I liked the liquid sunshine. I didn’t like it at the time.

February 10, 2010.......mark it on your calendar. I go for yet another operation on my right foot. This time to take out the Titanium bar, which I managed to crack, and insert a long screw through the bones to realign them hoping to relive the pressure on the part of my foot that keeps the ulcer that is there from healing.

This time after the operation, I am going to be admitted into the hospital for a day (hopefully only one day) to receive IV antibiotics to keep any infection from settling in. The last two operations I had I developed an infection and had to do the antibiotics which resulted in me getting Thrush. So to avoid that, I’ll do the hospital thing.

So wish me well and I’ll let you all know what happened.

The Weather

For most of us Flo-idiots it seems on the surface to be cold outside. For me, it is fine. I woke up this morning and the temperature was 44˚ out. Some area’s of Florida, mostly inland, it was in the lower 30’s.

But, in the grand scheme of things, it is way better then shoveling snow, scrapping ice off your windows just to drive one or two blocks to the store.

Next week it will be back to “normal” for Florida weather in the winter. It is projected to be in the 70’s or better. That’s what I moved here for and I’m hoping that to happen.

I visit my foot doctor this Monday and it will be then that I pick a day for my foot surgery. I’m hopeful that it will be the end of my surgeries.

So, stay warm and I’ll report later on the day of my surgery.

L8er.....

Christmas 2009

Christmas has come and gone for another year. Our Christmas was not to different from the many people around the country that celebrate it. We had good food and Jim and Donna were over and later that same evening Donna’s brother and his wife came over for desert. It was nice. No snow as the rest of the country got but nice nonetheless.

New Years Day is fast approaching and it will be just another day. It brings the new year with hope and wishes for a healthy year. I am going for foot surgery some time in late January so I am hoping that this will be the last surgery I will ever have on that foot.

Anyway, now your up to date and yu know what I know.

See you next year!

Bears and Foot

Well, it’s official..... the mighty Chicago Bears officially suck. Six turnovers in one game? Come on, at least play like you want to win even if you deep down inside don’t want to win.

I heard on yesterdays game that the coach, Lovie Smith has his contract until 2013. Four more years of watching this crap. Now that I live here in Florida I should become a Fin’s or Buc’s fan. But I think they suck too.

Something has to be done. And before next season.

Sometime near the end of January I am having another foot operation. This time it is to take out the Titanium bar that is cracked and shave off some bone that has been bothering me. Hopefully I will be all better by March, but we will see.

Later All............

Thanksgiving

Well, Thanksgiving has come and gone again for another year.

To me it was just another day. We had Turkey and all the fixin’s. It was just Nancy and her Mom and me for dinner. Because Thanksgiving is over, it means that Christmas is just around the corner.

I have sent invitations out to all of Nancy’s brothers to spend Christmas with us here in Florida. So far the only one that said that they were not coming was Nancy’s brother Paul. He called and said he could not afford it because his daughter is going to Loyola and the bills are coming in and that is that. He did say he would like to come here some time in the future but did not say when.

Billy and Cookie have dogs and it would cost a lot of money to board them for a few days so I’m guessing they are out also.

That leaves Jimmy and Jack. Jimmy is here in Florida now, in his condo at Ft. Myers Beach. He is planning on staying a few months so he will be here Christmas. Jack is unknown. Talking to Tim, his son, seems to lead on that they are not coming either. So the only one that would be here is Jim and Donna. Oh well there is always next year.

So that’s it for now. I’ll be here again after Christmas.

Holidays

Well the holidays are upon us again. Seems like only yesterday we were getting use to writing 2009 on all our paperwork. But like the seasons, the year has passed and it is time to do it all over again. Now we have to learn to write 2010 on all our checks and doctors forms.

Kind of funny I guess. I remember when we were kids, the longest time in the world was in grammar school and the big hand was on the 6 and the little hand was on the 2. That half an hour seemed to be the longest point in our day. Three o’clock dismissal time was sooooo long to wait.

Now that we are older and have all the time in the world you soon discover that the time flies by so quick that the only reason that you notice is because you have to write 2010 on the checks and doctor’s forms. Otherwise we all would walk around wondering what year it is.

Seriously though, time does go by quick and for kids Christmas seemed to never come quick enough.

Happy Thanksgiving to all and see you later,

Rich

Uncle Julio's Mex Restaurant

Today we took a drive to a restaurant located in Boca Raton Florida. It is on the “right” side of the country, or the right side of the state of Florida.

There is a restaurant just like it in Chicago on north Ave & Halsted. The food it great and it was well worth the 2.75 hours to get there from Cape Coral.

There was some nice shops, and the area it was in was really nice. See photos.....

I figured it was time to take the trip and why not. I’m retired so what else do I have to do.

Later.......

Sand Castles and Storms

Last Friday we went to Ft Myers Beach where they had a sand castle building contest. They started that day and the judging was to be on Sunday. So Friday was not the day to go because they had just started building them.

What was interesting to me was the fact that there are platforms that the builders build to get the height the sculptures’ need to get when designing them. I guess I was just surprised but then again I have never seen a very high sand sclupter.

We did not go back Sunday for the judging because of my feet but maybe next year we can get all the pictures of the sculpters.

As far as the storms part of the title, there was no storms. Hurricane "Ida" went up the west coast of Florida and hit the northern part of the state along with Alabama and Mississippi. No storms for Cape Coral or Fort Myers Beach.

Later all.................

Sunday Bears Game

So far at this point the Bears are winning the game. It is only the 3rd 1/4 and they have way enough time to lose it. A 12 yard punt by a Pro-Bowl punter put Cleveland in good field position and they scored.I usually say this at least once a season..... "If the Bears do not win this game, I ain't watching them anymore."

I do believe they will win the game but not before Cleveland makes them look bad. I don't know if Chicago looks good or if Clevelans is just playing bad.

It is 87º here in Florida, unfortunally I am still not allowed to go into the pool. The ulser on the botttom of my foot is healing but it is a very slow process. Pretty soon winter will be here and it will be too cold to go in. I guess I can skip the pool this year and get my act together for spring and summer 2010.

Cool..... sounds like a plan.

Have a good week.............

Octoberfest

Yesterday we all went to Octoberfest here in Cape Coral. There is a lot of Germans here on the Cape. The fest was nice, they even had a polka band from Chicago playing there.

There was food, lots of entertainment and many things to do with the kids. Pleanty of people, very crowded. But nice. They had a band/orchastra playing that came from Germany. I say band/orchastra because there was a guy directing the musicians like in a concert. I am not sure what he is called.

Anyway, a good time was had by all. After the fest we went to UNO's Pizza for dinner. If you did not live in Florida you would think you were in Chicago. Maybe one day they will open a Gino's East or South would be better. :-) That would be nice.

Anyway, have a good week all.......
